How 2020 has Changed the Quality of Social Media Content (for the better!)

See this content in the original post

Have you noticed how the quality of content on social media has changed this year? This is something that’s been really interesting to observe on social media over the past 6 months with all of the changes to the way marketing teams and creatives work.

When Coronavirus sent us all home back in March there was no way we could get out to studios and create expensive social content, we all had to scale back and get creative using the tools and props we have (which actually, has been really fun!) and it may have changed the way we create content forever.

Has the quality of content changed for better or worse?

Honestly?

For better!

More real, raw and personal content is not necessarily a bad thing, I for one, am loving seeing a more personal side to some of the big brands that prior to this, the content was professionally curated in a studio and the visuals have been very clean cut and polished.

The standard of content creation and production has dropped across social channels and people are accepting lower quality content than they ever have and that content is resonating more than it ever has.

Why? Because it is real, personal and relatable.

It’s time to get personal…

2020 gave us Zoom! How did we do video meetings before this amazing tool came into our lives? Don’t you just love it when a colleague or client is on a zoom call and their kids, dogs or parents come into the shot, it brings an unseen personal element into the working relationship and you can tell a lot about a person when you see what artwork or features they have in their home & when you meet their dog or pet!

A glimpse into our personal lives is bringing this kind of human nature around all of what we do and it seriously is doing wonders to bring out the personality of our colleagues, mentors and brands.

Yes, we are working for big businesses. But we also have personal lives and this new way of content curation is opening up that genuine behind the scenes aspect of what we do.

I personally am really excited about what this year is doing for brands because the content is becoming more creative and personal than its ever been.

2020 has given us the rise of TikTok

TikTok is all about the type of content that is quick, fun and relatable. I honestly think one of the reasons why TikTok has blown up and done so well for so many brands & as a platform on a whole is because of the way the content is produced.

Content on TikTok is very quick, native and natural and is often done at home! This style of natural content really engages the target audience, which as we know, is really important. There’s something relatable about seeing someone in their kitchen or pyjamas isn’t there? If you haven’t added TikTok into your marketing strategy yet, I really recommend you look into it. I’ve written a post ALL about how you can get started on TikTok here.

We’ve seen it first hand…

From what we’ve seen in ad platforms and ad spend over the last few months, content that’s more native and natural, and therefore resonates with humans, (which again is what we are trying to do) really does deliver amazing results!

A campaign that we’ve recently delivered for a really big brand about ‘Back to School’ had some record return on ad spend and performance. The content was very natural & native and therefore it really drove the sales and resonated with the target audience, a very successful campaign indeed!

So what now?

I seriously encourage you as a brand or a business to get more creative. Is there anybody within your business that would be happy to support you in creating content? Maybe you have a colleague who creates amazing family videos or a relative that is amazing at photography! Or can you tap into using more user-generated content working with influencers and content creators across social platforms?

Isn’t it exciting! Have a go, get creative, see what you can come up with! I’d love to know how you get on.
